Task 1: Empathy Map & Problem Statement

Week 1

Fig. 1.1 Task 1 progression in Miro, Week 1 (9/4/2023)

We were a bit slow on the progress of Task 1, mainly because we were a little lost on where to begin. I recollected what I had learned in Minor Project and tried to apply it to this module, also advising my group members to do the same, as they were taking it this semester.

Fig. 1.2 Drafted questions for the survey and interview, Week 1 (9/4/2023)

We began with our research on GSK and drafting the survey and interview questions. We decided to do a survey for the general public, to get a grasp of their views and actions when it came to the disposal of blister packs. Besides that, we decided to interview at least 4 asthma patients, who are my group members' peers.

We were also unsure if the art direction of the sculpture were to be given by GSK, as we thought this project was like a commission from a client, so I was a bit wearier about doing things right. But it turns out that we had to do our own research on our chosen target audience and then figure out the design direction of the sculpture.

Fig. 1.3 Initial ideas, Week 1 (9/4/2023)

We came up with a few initial ideas of what we wanted to do for our art installation and compiled our ideas on Miro. My ideas are mainly infused with nature elements.

Initial ideas:
  1. Dark concept: A sculpture of a man with a stomach/body full of meds, but there are holes on other parts of his body (face, arms etc) that are concealed poorly with face masks, to show that even with all the medicine, he's unable to get well.
  2. Fantasy concept: Hanahaki disease - flowers growing from lungs (idea sprouted from asthma)
  3. Fantasy concept: "Gaia" - mother Earth (greek mythology)
  4. "Contamination" - concept of waste contamination: A sculpture of a humanoid figure with fungus skin (layers of blister packs)
  5. Fashion concept: Recycled fashion garment sculptures with elements of nature
  6. "Eat your medicine": Inhalers as pipes with blister packs & balloons flowing out of them.
  7. "The reefs we killed": Sea pollution from waste.
  8. "The flowers are good at concealing their rot": Flowers growing from a landfill of inhalers & blister packs.
Ms Lilian noted that we are a 'visual' group, and a lot of our ideas have the potential of being combined into one.

Week 2

In week 2, we had to speed up the workflow. We started by revising the survey and interview questions. Each member was to distribute the survey to people of various ages (at least 20 per member), and Devina, Luisa and Sea were to begin conducting the interviews. As it was my task to revise the questions, I recalled back a feedback Dr Hayati gave in Design Research Methodology - ensure that the questions aren't biased as it will affect the way participants answer.

After collecting our findings and data, they were sorted and summarised for our Task 1 presentation. We also compared our survey and interview results, to see if there were any similarities and differences. All questions and results can be found in our Task 1 Project Document slides in the submissions section below.

Fig. 1.5 Empathy Map: Asthma Patient, Week 3 (16/4/2023)

After data sorting and comparisons, we made 2 empathy maps - one for our survey (general public) and the other for our interview (asthma patients).

While going through the process of creating an empathy map, we were a bit confused as to how to create one. At first, I thought we only needed one empathy map, but after some research, I found out that the number of empathy maps need to correspond to the number of personas we wanted to create.

Personas are based on our empathy maps.

A bit iffy about the problem statement but it'll have to do.🚢🏻‍♀️

Week 3

Ms Lilian noted that our presentation was good on the aspects of the survey and interviews and that we really understood and researched our targeted audiences well. However, we needed to shift our focus from asthma to the proper disposal of medical waste (inhalers and blister packs). Aside from that, we were informed that Task 2 is due Week 4, Wednesday (26/4) instead of the original date of 8/5. We were also advised to create prototypes simultaneously with our ideation stage, to prevent wasting time.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2:
- The message and theme all come from you and your data collected.
- Create personas.
- You can include your rough ideas (Task 2) into your Task 1 presentation if you think that it supports your data.
- You guys are a very visual-based group, a lot of the ideas can be merged into one.

Week 3:
- Separate project document from task 1 slides.
- Insightful survey. Good organised information and research on the targeted audience.
- Persona doesn't match up to survey data (aware of environmental damage but don't know how to dispose of properly).
- Focus is heavy on asthma, should focus on spreading awareness on proper disposal of medical waste (inhalers & blister packs).
- The balloon element is implemented by GSK, it is not necessary to incorporate balloons into your art installation, more of GSK's choice if they see fit to incorporate it.

REFLECTION

Experience
Going into this project was quite challenging. I felt expectations and pressure since I was the only member who had already taken Minor Project and hence had experienced the complicated process of design thinking. Despite being in a group, I felt alone in the process of Task 1, probably because I had to constantly lead, and sometimes it felt like spoon-feeding.

Observation
I looked at some seniors’ past Collaborative Design Practice work to gauge what we had to do. I observed how detailed their findings were and how organised they were with the presentation of their research and findings.

Findings
It was a bit surprising to know that all 4 interviewees were unaware that the hospital collects inhalers, despite being asthma patients themselves, and that 60% of the survey participants weren't aware of drug disposal services.
